Whiplash is a hyperextension-hyperflexion injury that's commonly caused by the instant acceleration-deceleration force in motor vehicle accidents. The symptoms of whiplash are the result of the sudden forward and backward jerking of the neck and head. If that jerking causes disc displacement at one more levels of your neck, and it's left untreated, you're likely to have an injury that will stay with you for life.
Most people don't ignore that type of an injury. It's just too painful. The stiffness and pain that comes with it can affect every aspect of your waking moments. When you schedule an appointment with us at Twin Cities Chiropractic & Rehabilitation in St. Paul, you're taking the first step in the right direction. Your condition will be evaluated with the goal of getting you back to your everyday life and maximum medical improvement.
The Biomechanics of Whiplash
The cervical spine has a natural C-shape. In less than a half of a second after impact, the C-shape becomes an S-shape with the lower cervical spine extending backward while the upper part of of it flexes forward. They both move significantly beyond their ordinary range of motion with a likelihood of resulting injuries to cervical spine ligaments and discs.
If a person doesn't feel immediate neck pain and discomfort, symptoms will start to develop within a day. Those symptoms might include:
- Pain and loss of range of motion of the neck
- Headaches that originate at the base of the skull
- Shoulder pain and tenderness
- Pain in the upper back
- Arm pain, numbness or tingling
- Muscle spasms
Other symptoms might include blurred vision, difficulty concentrating or impaired memory. Most whiplash injuries won't heal on their own. If you experience any of these symptoms after an auto accident, you'll want to see Dr. Scot at Twin Cities Chiropractic & Rehabilitation for an evaluation right away. The sooner that you begin traditional chiropractic care and treatment, the sooner your symptoms will be relieved.
Our goal is to relieve your pain and spasms while increasing your range of motion.
